The Gymnastics Functional Measurement Tool (GFMT)

Research Home | Lab Research Summary | People | Publications | Contact

The Gymnastics Functional Measurement Tool (GFMT) is a set of functional measurements to be used to gauge gymnasts’ physical abilities without measuring gymnastic skills.  This “tool” can be used to take reliable and valid measurements of gymnasts’ muscular strength, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, physical agility, and flexibility, all in the context of gymnastics competitive elements. The GFMT is designed to be a field test to help improve coaches’ abilities to monitor their gymnasts’ physical fitness progression, to help identify weaknesses in physical abilities that can be improved to create a more physically round gymnast, to help identify areas of structural weakness, or to aid in the return to function following an injury or time off from the sport.
