Clinical Education experiences are an extremely important and substantial part of the program at the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences. During their clinical education, students integrate aspects of classroom learning, make clinical decisions, and manage patient problems with supervision. Clinical education experiences designed to promote professional socialization and application of didactic learning are incorporated throughout the curriculum, beginning with half-day field trips in the first trimester and progressing to two 13-week, full-time experiences. The curriculum includes a total of 38 weeks of full-time clinical experience. The University maintains contractual agreements with clinical facilities across the United States that are representative of physical therapy practice across the health care continuum. Each facility provides clinical instructors who supervise students and provide written feedback on student performance. We select clinical sites that meet the guidelines of the American Physical Therapy Association1. Scheduling of clinical experiences depends on facility availability; the number of available facilities may change annually. A list of clinical facilities that have contractual agreements with the University and can accept students is provided to students prior to selection of clinical experiences. Many clinical facilities require that students and employees have criminal background checks prior to working at the facility. Please be aware that in the event that adverse information, such as a felony conviction, is obtained during the check, clinical facilities may prohibit students from participating in clinical experiences. In addition, state regulatory departments may prohibit graduates with felony convictions from sitting for the licensure examination. 1Guidelines for Clinical Education, American Physical Therapy Association, 1993.
