| Paula Tanabe, PhD, RN is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine with a secondary faculty appointment at the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University. Dr. Tanabe is an emergency medicine and health services researcher and completed her PhD in 1996 and a two-year, post-doctoral Health Services Research Fellowship at Northwestern University. Key areas of research include pain management practices in the emergency department, research with the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) five-level triage system, and the role of the emergency clinician in screening and referral for patients with undetected hypertension. Dr. Tanabe is an emergency nurse by training and has over 20 years experience as an ED nurse, researcher and educator. Current funding includes the following projects: “Undetected Hypertension in the Emergency Department” (RO3 HS015619-01A1, Agency for Healthcare Research Quality) and “Should you Close Your Waiting Room?” (Funded by the Emergency Medicine/Emergency Nursing Foundation, Team Grant, Dr. Tanabe and Dr. Gisondi). She is a member of the publications committee for the “Pain in Emergency Medicine Initiative Study Group, (Dr. Knox Todd, Principal Investigator). Dr. Tanabe has served as the Co-Chair of the National Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)/ American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) five-level triage task force that has made recommendations nationally regarding five-level triage systems.
