The Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) offers its students the opportunity to conduct research during the summer after their M1 year. The Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) educates FSM students in the skills required for biomedical and clinical research. Students in the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) are also encouraged to apply.
The three-month summer break after the first year is an optimal time for medical students to engage in their research experience. Opportunities to engage in research with medical school faculty members may be identified through the Medical Student Summer Research Committee, or through faculty who have interests in mentoring students. An informational meeting about the MSSRP is held in the fall. This meeting outlines program details, deadlines, research opportunities, and the application process. Successful completion of the MSSRP can lead to further training in FSM's Research Thesis Program.
