Radiation Oncology

The Department of Radiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine offers graduate education in diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine. Each program provides an integrated learning experience that combines patient care, study, and research. Upon completion of each program, residents are well prepared for the American Board of Radiology examination.

Residents in each program are selected based on information from the application form, scholastic records, letters of recommendation, and personal interviews. The program directors assign the residents and allocate their rotations. All appointments in the program are subject to annual review.

The four-year approved program in radiation oncology provides education leading to examination by the American Board of Radiology. The residency offers increasing responsibility throughout the program. Residents receive detailed didactic and clinical experience in medical physics, radiobiology, and clinical radiation oncology.

The Radiation Oncology Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is the primary treatment and teaching facility; Children's Memorial and Evanston also participate.

Equipment includes three Philips SL-15 units with multileaf collimation, a gamma knife unit, IMRT, HDR, and deep and superficial hyperthermia. All standard isotopes are available for brachytherapy. Three-dimensional CT treatment planning, conformal radiation therapy, fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy, gamma knife radiosurgery, and eye plaques are routinely available.

Application Requirements

Residents may enter the program after a flexible internship or a year or more of residency in another clinical specialty.
