For most radiation treatment, the department uses three linear accelerators (linacs) that deliver x-ray beams (4 MV to 18 MV) and electron beams (6 MeV to 20 MeV) to the targeted disease site. Each linac has a multileaf collimator that helps maximize the dose to the defined site only.
For treating malignant and benign cranial lesions using radiosurgery, staff members employ an Elekta gamma knife, Model C, which provides automated patient positioning within the unit. For treating gynecological tumors and prostate tumors, low-dose rate brachytherapy is given using special equipment. A Nucletron HDR unit uses high-dose rate brachytherapy to treat gynecological malignant tumors, tumor beds in breast cancer, and bile duct lesions. Superficial and deep hyperthermia are provided using the BSD-2000 system. The treatment planning systems the department uses include: the ADAC Pinnacle system for external beam therapy, the Nucletron PlATO system for HDR treatments, a Prowess workstation to plan prostate seed implants and LDR brachytherapy, and the Elekta GammaPlan workstation. New equipment that enables the most current treatments is regularly considered for purchase and, if feasible, purchased and installed. |
