Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowships

In conjunction with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago offers several physician fellowships each year in the following areas:  spinal cord injury, multidisciplinary pain management, pediatric rehabilitation, brain injury medicine, and musculoskeletal, spine and sports medicine. The goal of our fellowship program is to train the physiatrist to become an expert and outstanding physician in their subspecialty area, to teach them the necessary tools to do research in this area, and to eventually become leaders in the field of physiatry. The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is unsurpassed in the clinical services it offers, its research programs and as an educational institution.

As a clinical service organization, RIC has been ranked the "Best rehabilitation hospital in America" by US News and World Report since 1991. We are not just a rehabilitation hospital, but an entire network of rehabilitation service centers. This includes inpatient services provided at five different hospitals and outpatient services at over forty different sites. The strength of our clinical programs comes from the excellence of our clinical staff and the diversity of services that we offer. Included is a list of some of our special programs. These programs allow focused expertise to be developed to help our patients overcome their individual disabilities. The RIC also benefits from close collaboration with some excellent partners, such as Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is one of the largest rehabilitation research organizations in North America. We currently have over twelve million dollars a year in grant support. Our research effort is very broad based, however, we do have some areas of special emphasis. These include the clinical areas of amputation, arthritis, chronic pain, musculoskeletal/sports medicine, pediatric, spinal cord injury and stroke. Other areas with research emphasis include motor control, electrophysiology, biomechanics, prosthetics, biomedical engineering, and outcomes research. Our research efforts are also augmented by strong collaborations with Northwestern University and Medical School partners. In particular, there are close collaborations with the Departments of Orthopedics, Neurology and Rheumatology in the Medical school; with the Northwestern University's Department of Physical Therapy and with the University's Departments of Physiology, Health Policy, Biomedical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Finally, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago has a strong commitment to health care education. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine is housed within the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Northwestern University medical students rotate through a PM&R rotation at RIC for two weeks annually. We have one of the largest and most highly respected residency programs in the country, with approximately forty residents in physiatry each year. There are equally a large number of postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows working in various laboratories in RIC. We have an extensive program to do outreach health care education. The RIC Academy conducts over forty courses relating to rehabilitation each year. The RIC also houses the Northwestern University Prosthetics and Orthotics Center. Finally, a large array of courses are available through our university partners.
