Interdepartmental Immunobiology Center
at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine

Since its inception in 1993, the Interdepartmental Immunobiology Center has served as a focus for research in immunology. The idea for the center came from a study by the medical school administration that targeted immunobiology as a research area for development. Currently the center's membership includes more than 60 faculty members from 15 departments and divisions located throughout the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University.

Center members' research interests include applying molecular and cellular immunological approaches to the study of the pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases and basic mechanisms involved in immunity to infectious organisms, autoimmunity, tumor and transplantation immunity, allergy, immune system regulation, signal transduction, gene regulation, and antigen processing.  Stephen D. Miller, PhD,  Congressman John Edward Porter Professor of Biomedical Research and center director, leads efforts to build on the center's strength in autoimmunity of the central nervous system to establish a formal program in autoimmunity.

Collaboration among clinicians and basic scientists is facilitated through the center's conferences, seminars, and monthly research progress forums. Ongoing research activities are supported by the center's shared equipment, which includes 3 Becton Dickinson flow cytometers, a 96-well Packard plate harvester and scintillation counter, an ELISPOT machine to enumerate lymphoid cells and their secreted products, and a SPOT-RT digital microscopy system.

Center Goals

The Interdepartmenatl Immunobiology Center's mission includes the following goals:

  •  Establish an identifiable center for those doing research in immunobiology and offer membership and a core of common equipment
  •  Serve as a focus for graduate and postgraduate education in immunobiology under the auspices of the Integrated Graduate Program in the Life Sciences and other graduate programs
  •   Aid recruiting outstanding immunobiology researchers in a variety of basic science and clinical departments
  •   Promote and coordinate interdepartmental activities in immunobiology by sponsoring journal clubs and seminar programs
  •   Foster the development of immunobiology-oriented collaborative research efforts such as program project and center grants
  •   Promote the development and optimization of interdepartmental facilities related to immunobiology research
