GHECS Program Announcements

Please keep in mind that if you are a Feinberg student interested in an international experience or rotation, you will need to meet with the Augusta Webster Office of Medical Education.  OME will provide you with information about Northwestern University's global health opportunities and about institutional study abroad/ away rotation requirements.  Please set up an appointment BEFORE meeting with the GHECS coordinator about Family Medicine global health opportunities.

The Northwestern GHECS program is supporting student participation in community-focused, curriculum-driven programs both in Chicago and in several countries abroad.  Currently, we have established relationships with clinics in southern Belize and Momostenango, Guatemala.  We are building relationships with clinics in Liberia and Malawi.  In Chicago, Feinberg students work with Heartland International Health Center in the culturally diverse Uptown and Rogers Park neighborhoods.  In addition, we support ongoing projects with Heartland Alliance school-based health centers at Senn High School in Edgewater and Roosevelt High School in Albany Park, two of Chicago Public Schools most internationally diverse student bodies.

We would like to formally announce our first GHECS global clinic relationship with a rural clinic in Momostenango, Guatemala.  Please contact us for more information about the clinic or learning objectives for students who travel to the clinic.  We thank Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights and the Kovler Center for their assistance in forming this relationship.

We are now accepting applications for the Ken and Ruth Davee Scholarship in Global Health and Underserved Medicine.  This Department of Family Medicine scholarship is for Feinberg students who are interested in completing an elective rotation or public health project in an underserved area.  For more information or to apply, please visit the Ken and Ruth Dave Scholarship page.  Congratulations to our 2008 scholarship recipients!

The Department of Family Medicine is partnering with the Heartland Alliance School Based Health Center at Senn High School to create a health sciences mentoring program between Feinberg and Senn students starting in fall 2008.  Senn High school, located in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, is one of the most diverse high schools in the United States with students from over 70 countries.  If you are a Feinberg student (M1 to M4) interested in youth mentoring who can dedicate up to two hours a week working with a Senn student, please contact Catharine Smith.

The GHECS resource corner in Family Medicine continues to grow and now includes notebooks on study abroad opportunities and research guidelines.  Please visit us in Abbott Hall, Suite 1301.
