Fellowships in pediatric dermatology (both clinical and research) are available. The Dermatopathology Fellowship Program of McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University is committed to the training of excellent dermatopathologists who will eventually strive for continued dedication to and enrichment of the field. The fellowship is the result of the joint efforts of the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology at Northwestern University, each having ACGME accredited residency programs in Dermatology and Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as fellowships in subspecialties of both disciplines. This dynamic interface provides a myriad of opportunities for research and teaching material for the fellow. Currently, one fellow is selected every two years, with one year (first) being primarily dedicated to research, and the second year dedicated to the fulfillment of core requirements for general dermatology/pathology and dermatopathology, dependent on the fellow’s background. The ACGME requires accreditation for 12 months of core rotations. The program director of the fellowship is Joan Guitart, MD, who is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Dermatology, and Dermatopathology, and is the Director of the Dermatopathology laboratory. The fellow also works in conjunction with the clinical dermatologists, dermatopathologists and anatomic and clinical pathologists at Northwestern’s Departments of Dermatology and Pathology. Several clinical and laboratory-based research fellowships are available. Clinical research fellowships are 1-2 years in duration (July 1 - June 30) and are based both at Northwestern and Children’s Memorial Hospital. Fellowships are offered preferentially to physicians with at least one year of internship training and who wish to pursue further training in dermatology. Also, the Clinical trials fellowships at Children’s Memorial Hospital are preferentially offered to physicians with some previous training in pediatrics. These fellowships provide an opportunity for intense exposure to both investigator-initiated and sponsored research, interaction with patients, and participation in didactic sessions in Dermatology at Northwestern and Children's Memorial Hospital. Prospective candidates are encouraged to submit a current CV, and personal statement electronically to Dr. Dennis West at dwest@northwestern.edu and a copy to Dr. Amy Paller at apaller@northwestern.edu prior to October 1.
